| Judicial Philosophy (Max 250 words) | The judicial philosophy of my old boss, Justice Antonin Scalia, is my philosophy too—that judges are the servants of the People and are there to facilitate the People’s self-government by providing accurate, precise, scholarly, reliable, and clear interpretations of legal texts. Whether the Constitution, a statute, a contract, a deed, or a will, the judicial role remains the same: determining what the words in those legal texts meant at the time they were written, because that is what they mean today. All judges claim that they never “legislate from the bench” and “set their personal preferences aside”—easy things to say, but harder to do. But Justice Scalia actually knew how to do it, and he did, and he taught his law clerks how to do it, too. The pledge I make to the People of Texas is that I will follow the law in every single case, and work as hard as necessary to get it right, exactly as he did in his decades of service to our country. | ||
| Misc | University Area Rotary Club | I have argued at the U.S. Supreme Court, and not just state and federal trial and appellate courts. I have been on the inside at the U.S. Supreme Court, as a clerk to Justice Scalia, where I saw how a court of last resort and discretionary jurisdiction operates. I have helped draft the rules for all Texas courts as a member of the Supreme Court Advisory Committee. I have seen the inside of legal systems where the rule of law is in short supply, such as the year I spent in Baghdad, where I spent hours every week with the Chief Justice of Iraq. I have now been serving as a Justice on a court of last resort, the Texas Supreme Court, where I argued many cases. I have served on the Texas Judicial Council, the highest policy making body for the Texas Judiciary. I am the only candidate in this race to have any of those experiences, and I am honored that Governor Abbott—a former Texas Supreme Court Justice himself, someone who knows how the institution works—chose me from a broad field to serve our State in this capacity. And I am honored that every single former Justice—men and women who well know my work and the work of the other candidates—has endorsed me in this race. | |
