Justice Puryear is the senior justice on the Third Court and began serving on the court in January of 2001. During his tenure on the court, he has authored well over 2500 opinions. Justice Puryear led all Texas appellate court justices in total opinion production in 2015 and 2016, issuing some 220 opinions in 2016. |

| Justice Puryear began his legal career in 1983 with the Travis County Attorney's Office, where he started as a misdemeanor prosecutor. He worked his way up through the organization, eventually serving as First Assistant from 1987-1990. Puryear also served as Deputy Director of the Special Crimes Division under (then) Texas Attorney General John Cornyn from 1999-2000, where he supervised lawyers in the prosecution of various felony offenses. |

I believe all judges at all levels should treat all litigants and their counsel with courtesy, respect and dignity at all times in written and spoken communications, even when patience is tried. All with cases before the court should be treated equally under the law regardless of race, color, creed, gender or sexual orientation. Judges should know or learn the law and apply the law to the evidence of the case before the court. Judges should be fair and impartial at all times. If the Judge cannot be fair or there is any appearance that the Judge may not be fair, the Judge should recuse himself or herself from hearing the matter. Though Judges run in partisan political parties, the party affiliation or political philosophy of being conservative or liberal should not enter into any decision before the court. | Justice Puryear is a proven conservative who understands that judges should interpret and apply the law, not legislate from the bench. Puryear is firmly committed to the rule of law and his decisions are guided by law and fact, rather than by personal opinion or policy considerations. |
